Comparing Predictors and Outcomes of Higher Allostatic Load across Zoo-Housed African Great Apes

چکیده
Stressors over the lifespan can contribute to physiological dysregulation, or allostatic load. Allostatic load has been studied in humans using indices (ALIs) for 25 years, but same methods are rarely applied other species. We constructed an ALI zoo-housed western lowland gorillas, chimpanzees, and bonobos tested potential predictors of health outcomes associated with scores ranged from 0–6 gorillas chimpanzees 0–7 bonobos. Age was significantly not Cumulative stressful events were positively chimpanzees. Wild-caught had higher than zoo-born conspecifics, rearing differences between animals significant any may affect associations birthplace as results change when it is included a covariate. retained best-fit models risk all-cause morbidity, cardiac disease, mortality risk. Some analyses herein limited by use retrospective data, such reason sample collection length records provided individual animals. Nevertheless, these data indicate additional research needed optimize ALIs non-human primates.

Neighborhood poverty and allostatic load in African American youth.
OBJECTIVE This study was designed to determine whether living in a neighborhood in which poverty levels increase across adolescence is associated with heightened levels of allostatic load (AL), a biological composite reflecting cardiometabolic risk. The researchers also sought to determine whether receipt of emotional support could ameliorate the effects of increases in neighborhood poverty on ...

متن کاملAnthrax in Western and Central African great apes.
During the period of December 2004 to January 2005, Bacillus anthracis killed three wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) and one gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) in a tropical forest in Cameroon. While this is the second anthrax outbreak in wild chimpanzees, this is the first case of anthrax in gorillas ever reported. The number of great apes in Central Africa is dramatically declini...
متن کاملThe last great apes?
F orty years ago, adolescent Figan set off confidently into the woods of Tanzania as though he knew of a food source even richer than the bananas near Jane Goodall's camp. Older and stronger chimpanzees would follow him away. Then he'd lose them and circle back to gorge himself on bananas. One day, a high-ranking male turned up in the meantime and sat eating, in full possession of the site. Whe...
